Hey there! Let's take a chill stroll through the wild history of mental health treatment. Buckle up because it's been a rollercoaster ride from ancient mystical vibes to popping pills like it's nobody's business.


Ancient Beliefs:

Long ago our ancestors thought mental health issues were related to a cosmic struggle. We're talking exorcisms, rituals, and trying to convince the gods to cut us some slack. Not exactly your modern therapy session, huh?


Institutional Care aka Asylums:

Fast forward to the 18th century, and asylums came into play. Spoiler: they weren't the retreats or vacation hotspots people hoped for. These places were more like horror movie sets, with conditions that would make your hair stand on end. Mental health was still the family secret you kept in the attic. It was viewed as shameful for someone to have a mental illness. #nobueno


Freud and the Mind Games:

Then, boom! Freud and his gang busted onto the scene, turning mental health into a game of analyzing dreams and talking about close knit interpersonal stuff. Welcome to psychoanalysis, where the couch became the hottest accessory. Focusing on the unconscious mind and exploring the roots of mental health issues took precedence. #Freud


Bye-Bye Asylums, Hello Community:

Rolling into the mid-20th century, governments worldwide decided asylums were so last season. Deinstitutionalization was in, and community-based care was the cool kid on the block. But, let's be real, not everything went as smoothly as planned. Challenges in funding and infrastructure led to mixed outcomes.


Then, boom! Freud and his gang busted onto the scene, turning mental health into a game of analyzing dreams and talking about close knit interpersonal stuff.

Medication Blitz, Pills and More Pills:

Cue the drumroll for the second half of the 20th century. We discovered magic beans—psychiatric meds! All of a sudden, it was not just about talking it out and telling your innermost thoughts; it was about taking pills and finding the right mix to balance you out. The discovery of psychiatric medications, such as antidepressants and antipsychotics revolutionized mental health treatment. A combination of medication and therapy became a common strategy for managing mental health disorders which is still prevalent today.


Advocacy, Less Stigma, More Peace:

Now lets take a look into recent times, where we're finally kicking stigma to the curb. Advocacy groups are shouting from the rooftops that mental health is just health. And now, it's not just about meds; it's yoga, mindfulness, and painting your feelings. Holistic approaches have gained popularity, emphasizing the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, and physical health. #mindfulness
